The photographs are all on the wall!
This is the final screw going into the final mirror plate on the final photograph of Only in England.
We had tremendous help from Michael and Steve today, Michael with the hanging and Steve with adjusting the lighting levels across the gallery. As we have said in an earlier blog post, getting the right sort of light at the right levels has been an exercise which has taken quite a bit of time and investment. We have also had to be sure that the temperature and humidity levels in the gallery are maintained at the correct levels. Paper conservation is a tricky business and these parameters matter a great deal. The gallery today is a huge contrast with the summery conditions immediately outside on the Redcar Esplanade. Visitors to the exhibition over the summer months may enjoy the cool shade we can now provide.
Having completed the hang at Kirkleatham on Tuesday, yesterday and today have been spent at Palace Arts. Yesterday Bev and Sue took control of assembling the last of the new lighting units...
...while Mark and Amy condition checked the exhibition pieces.
Every single photograph was carefully examined for signs of damage or change of any kind to the image, mount or frame. Even if there was 'no change', this was carefully noted down and then dated and signed by both parties. This process will be repeated at the end of the exhibition as everything is taken down and packed away ready for transporting to the next venue.
Alan Morley was on hand to assist in getting the actual hanging off to a flying start.
We still have a day's work ahead ensuring that labels and text panels are in place, that everything is polished clean, that other exhibits are laid out, that the video installation is set up, that packing cases are securely stored away, that signage is printed and installed...
That should keep us busy until we open the doors on Saturday morning both at Palace Arts and at Kirkleatham Museum.
Mark and Amy will be on Zetland FM tomorrow morning from approximately 10:20. Tune in if you'd like to hear them talking with Julie Donaldson about Only in England.
And that's it for this blog post - just one final image of Mark and Michael hanging that last photograph - a moment we're savouring.
